Surface Free Energy Components of Glass from Ellipsometry and Zeta Potential Measurements

چکیده

Two different experimental approaches based on ellipsometry and zeta potential measurements have been employed to determine the dispersion and polar surface free energy components of glass. From ellipsometry the adsorption isotherms of n-octane and water have been determined, yielding values for the film pressures of n-octane and water and the dispersion and polar surface free energy components of glass. Similarly, zeta potentials in water of glass covered with various amounts of n-octane and nhexanol have been determined. Next, the film pressures of these liquids and surface free energy components o f glass were also calculated. Thus determined values are 32 and 80 m J / m 2 (from ellipsometry) and 25 and 80 m J / m z (from zeta potentials) for the dispersion and polar components, respectively. The correspondence between the surface free energies obtained by two completely independent methods gives confidence to the approaches employed. © 1989 Academic Press, Inc.

Physicochemical surface properties of nonencapsulated and encapsulated coagulase-negative staphylococci.

Cell surfaces of three nonencapsulated and three encapsulated coagulase-negative staphylococci were characterized by their surface free energies, zeta potentials, and elemental and molecular compositions. Surface free energies were calculated from contact angle measurements with various liquids. All six strains showed a high surface free energy (103 to 126 mJ.m-2), estimated from the concept of...

Extraction of Some Divalent Metal Ions (Cadmium, Nickel and Lead) from Different Tea and Rice Samples Using Ghezeljeh Nanoclay (Geleh-Sar-Shoor) as a New Natural Sorbent

This article presents the method of extraction-preconcentration of Lead, Cadmium, and Nickel ions from food samples using the Ghezeljeh montmorillonite nanoclay (Geleh-Sar-Shoor) as a new native adsorbent in batch single component systems. The extraction-preconcentration of heavy metals were carried out by applying the solid phase extraction (SPE) method followed by atomic abs...

Application of SCB Test and Surface Free Energy Method in Evaluating Crack Resistance of SBS Modified Asphalt Mixes

Cohesion properties of the binder matrix within asphalt mixes and adhesion characteristics of the asphalt binder and aggregate particles are the two major mechanisms resisting against cracking in asphalt mixes. This study is focused on estimating crack resistance of asphalt mixes at intermediate temperatures through evaluation of cohesion and adhesion properties of binder-aggregate systems usin...

Adsorption of aminefluorides on human enamel.

Changes in surface characteristics of ground and polished human enamel after adsorption of two types of aminefluorides (AmF 297 and AmF 335) have been studied. After adsorption of aminefluorides from solutions with concentrations up to 10 mM for 2 min followed by rinsing of the surface with distilled water, contact angle measurements were carried out to yield surface free energies and ellifisom...

Physicochemical characterization of Escherichia coli. A comparison with gram-positive bacteria.

Eight Escherichia coli strains were characterized by determining their adhesion to xylene, surface free energy, zeta potential, relative surface charge, and their chemical composition. The latter was done by applying X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and infrared spectroscopy (IR). No relationship between the adhesion to xylene and the water contact angles of these strains was found. Three...
